Is Remote Working Driving The Exodus to Regional Areas?

January 28, 2021

Have you been working from home due to the Coronavirus pandemic, and no longer require to travel to work?

Are you seeking an environment change to leave behind the hustle and bustle of your current home location?

If so, you may be part of the massive wave that has captured the minds and hearts of fellow Australians.

Remote working has become the norm as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, allowing us to persevere and make a living whilst not being able to go into our physical workplaces. In fact many organisations have now made remote working permanent, not temporary. For example one of our major Melbourne based Big Four Banks developed a company policy that working from the office is be by the CEOs approval only - not the reverse.

Atlassian has now also shifted to embrace the next normal, and publicly stated its employees will now have the ability to work from wherever they want, with the company declaring its workers could feasibly never return to the office.

A Re-locating Population

Its now considered a key employee benefit to give your people the option, be flexible and mix onsite with remote work. The System will never go back to what it was. With this in mind, the once-desirable reasons behind living near our workplaces have diminished, leaving us Australians with an option that has previously been less considered due to the need to commute long distances every day ; moving outwards to regional areas where we achieve better work life balance, be part of communities that support us, and still generating the same income as if we lived in Richmond or Manly.

Covid-19 has propelled this major shift in population to regional areas such as Torquay in Victoria, with almost 12,000 Melbournians moving to such locations in the first quarter of 2020. Areas such as the Mornington and Bellarine Peninsulas have also gone gangbusters in demand, with a corresponding shortage supply, leading to huge price increase. One auction for an average size block in Safety Beach on the Mornington Peninsula just over an hours drive from Melbourne this month saw nearly 500 attendees , 15 bidders and ended up going for nearly 40% over the range.

Sydney residents also appear to be moving in this direction, demonstrated by residential property prices in Austinmer exploding more than 40 per cent in the last 12 months.

In comparison to previous years, such a large exodus has exceeded the running trend, establishing this shift in Australia’s population landscape a revolution of sorts. The affordable housing and relaxed lifestyles that regional locations are able to offer provide Australians with an escape from the fast-paced nature of the city.

Fellow Australians are chasing the Great Aussie Dream with a move to a “postcard town”, enabling them to take in the tranquillity of their surroundings.

This makes a regional move a desirable one, allowing one to simultaneously slow down and enjoy nature, as well as providing you with the convenient option of remote working. Wake up, log on, get kids to school, do some work, pick them and save yourself 2 hours per day in traffic or train time. Whats not to love about that!
